Earth Day 2022 - 22nd April

As it is Earth Day today we’re highlighting sustainability achievements on the Springfield site.

Sir Robert McAlpine (Hospital & Infrastructure Contractor)

Below is some information and statistics on what Sir Robert McAlpine are doing on the Springfield Redevelopment:

SRM’s 2020 Sustainability Strategy is split into four key pillars: carbon, resource efficiency, ethical procurement, and social value. The site has set BREEAM and Build Sure project objectives and targets in line with this to track against. Within the Build sure project targets, the site has 13 carbon meaningful actions to track our carbon footprint, ranging from nominating a carbon champion, installing LED lighting, and carrying out training with the project team on energy efficiency. The site has planned forecasted dates for all targets to efficiently assess against. Aligned with one of these targets, the site has nominated a carbon champion who supports and administrates the carbon management of the project. All of this aids the project to reduce its carbon emissions. Similarly, the site complies with SRM’s Sustainability & Environmental Policy, which outlines their commitment to reducing scoped emissions with an overall aspiration to be Net Zero Carbon by 2050. SRM use various online reporting platforms to monitor and analysis our progress.

  • To date, 97% of construction waste has been diverted from landfill and SRM use a recycling facility in London

  • The project has a Sustainable Procurement Plan which aims for 100% of timber and 90% all other key building materials to be responsibly sourced

  • Accumulative total of 23.99 KgCO2/m2(GIFA) on the project

  • All SRM plant is using biodiesel and the project is raising awareness of the government directive to ban red diesel on construction sites from 01.04.2022

  • Swapping internal combustion equipment with electric

  • Asking operatives to use public transport

  • Giving priority to local suppliers

  • The new park area will be the largest park built in London since the Olympic Park.

City & Country (Conversion of the listed main building to residential)

City & Country, the heritage developer on Springfield, are also doing things to help the Environment. The following are reclaimed on site: radiators (the old cast iron type), parquet flooring, any steels that come out of the building, they are either all re-used or recycled, they have a large plant yard in Essex where it goes back to if they need to store long term and they re-use on other schemes if they can.
